How to Prevent Hip Bursitis Flare-Ups

If you fell on your hip during a slip and fall accident, you may have developed hip bursitis, a painful inflammation of the cushioning sacs in the inner groin or surrounding the bony part of your hip. Even if treatments such as physical therapy and steroid injections have helped decrease the symptoms, you may later reinjure the same area or experience a flare-up of the condition.

5 Ways You Can Reduce the Risk of Flare-Ups

Although you may not have been able to prevent your hip bursitis from occurring, you can take steps to help prevent your bursitis from getting worse or experiencing painful flare-ups. The following tips may help prevent a hip bursitis flare-up:

  • Lift properly. You need to bend your knees when you lift to avoid putting extra stress on the bursae on your hips.

  • Take frequent breaks. If you perform repetitive actions, be sure to take breaks or vary your breaks with other activities.

  • Get up and walk. Sitting too long can put unwanted pressure on your hips’ bursae. Avoid sitting in one position for long periods of time and get up and walk frequently—even if only for short periods of time.

  • Be weight conscious. If you are overweight, losing weight can help remove excess weight and pressure on your hips.

  • Exercising. Regular exercise can strengthen your joints and muscles. Be certain to stretch before you exercise to help prevent any additional injuries.

Even if you take these preventive measures, you may still experience a reoccurrence of your bursitis. Your treatment could become expensive and long-term—on top of what you have already spent. However, you could be entitled to compensation for your medical bills and more from the business or person that caused your slip and fall.
